Components of an HVAC System:

1. Heating:

   • Furnaces: Use natural gas, propane, oil, or electricity to heat air, which is then distributed throughout the building via ducts.
   • Boilers: Heat water or produce steam, which is circulated through radiators or underfloor heating systems.
   • Heat Pumps: Can be used for both heating and cooling by transferring heat between the indoors and outdoors.

2. Ventilation:

   • Natural Ventilation: Involves air circulation through windows, vents, or other openings without mechanical assistance.
   • Mechanical Ventilation: Uses fans, ducts, and vents to circulate air, ensuring fresh air supply and removing stale air. It can be part of the overall HVAC system or operate independently.

3. Air Conditioning:

   • Central Air Conditioning: Cools air at a central location and distributes it throughout the building via a system of ducts.
   • Split Systems: Consist of an outdoor unit (condenser) and indoor unit(s) (evaporator), commonly used in residential and smaller commercial spaces.
   • VRF Systems: (Variable Refrigerant Flow) Adjust refrigerant flow based on the cooling or heating demand in different zones, offering precise temperature control and energy efficiency.

Types of HVAC Systems:

1. Split HVAC System:

   • Includes an outdoor unit (compressor and condenser) and an indoor unit (evaporator).
   • Common in residential buildings.

2. Hybrid Heat Split System:

   • Combines a heat pump with a furnace, allowing the system to choose the most efficient heating source based on temperature conditions.

3. Duct-Free (Mini-Split) System:

   • An alternative to traditional ducted systems, ideal for buildings where adding ductwork is impractical.
   • Includes an outdoor condenser and one or more indoor air handling units.
